Occupational Health Services
The aim of the OHS Act is to provide for the safety and health of persons at work and in connection with the use of plants and machinery.
It further provides for the protection of people other than people at work from hazards arising out of or in connection with the activities from people at work.
The main objective of the Act could be described as a pro-active attempt by the government to prevent and avoid work-related injuries and illnesses.
The Act governs the health and safety of the diverse industry of South Africa. It regulates and controls health and safety in all organizations, from a normal office environment to more hazardous environments like industrial plants and construction sites.
Medical Surveillance is done to identify possible occupational health diseases and intervene before incidences can occur.
Medical surveillance is required by law to be carried out in workplaces where workers are exposed to particular hazards.
The particular hazards that require medical surveillance include noise, asbestos, certain chemicals, certain biological agents, and lead.
It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that the medical surveillance is carried out at the cost of the employer.
